Operating
System
The type of server used can range
from an Intel based PC, to Sun Microsystems, with all
sorts of different hardware configurations. Most issues
regarding stability are determined at the server level,
which integrates tightly with the Operating System.
If you are looking for reliability, this is one of the
most important considerations: What is the server configuration?
Linux
We use Red Hat Linux on dual 450Mhz
Pentium III servers with 512MB of RAM to offer our Bronze,
Silver and Virtual Server packages.
The power
of Sun!
MagnaCom uses Sun Microsystems
Enterprise 250 Webservers for Unix hosting on our Gold
and Platinum packages. Each server has the following
specifications:
Dual Sun UltraSparc II 300MHz Processor
1,024 MB of Random Access Memory (RAM)
Dual Power Supply
RAID-5 Support
Over 90GB of data storage
With dual processors, over a Gigabyte of RAM, we can
say with confidence that our webservers are more robust
that any other hosting company today. With an investment
of over £40,000 into each server, a true sign
of our commitment to reliability.
The Sun Enterprise solution is one chosen based on mission
critical websites who also ultilise the Enterprise family
of servers. Amazon.com, eBay, Charles Shwab, and other
Internet reliant companies continue to use and support
Sun
Since we use Sun Enterprise servers, it makes sense
that we use Solaris 7 as our operating system. Solaris
7 is the first true 64-bit operating system available
from Sun Microsystems.
Windows
NT Servers
We use Compaq Proliant 1850R servers
running Windows NT Server 4.0 for all of our Windows
NT virtual server hosting. All servers are updated with
Service Pack 6.0 and use Microsoft IIS 5.0 for HTTP
service. Furthermore, all iMail and SQL servers are
separated from the webservers, thus taking the load
of SMTP, POP3, and SQL service off of the same server
used for HTTP. Once we feel Windows 2000 is stable,
we will be migrating to Windows 2000.
