Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the amount of data,
measured in Megabytes per month that clients may transfer
due to any traffic originating from or going to their
website. A large part of this traffic is web traffic
(website visitors) but can also be FTP (file uploads),
Anonymous FTP (file downloads), and even E-mail services.
Again, the more bandwidth allowed, the better!
As much
as you need
Those on the Gold and Platinum
hosting services are allowed to use as much bandwidth
as needed per month as long as their content is in accordance
with our Acceptable Uses Policy. In short, clients can
use an unlimited amount of bandwidth.
How can
we offer unlimited bandwidth?
This is a common concern that we
publicly address. While we, and anyone else for that
matter, has a limited amount of bandwidth, it is important
that to have access to more when needed. First,
our available bandwidth can be increased with a simple
telephone call, our policy is for our 95th percentile
of bandwidth consumption to never exceed 70% utilisation;
when this happens, we upgrade our bandwidth. Secondly,
with 3 diverse DS-3 lines from different carriers, bandwidth
is not only available when needed, but from different
sources. Finally, it is statistics which always prevail
and show that while some clients will end up consuming
more than their monthly fee worth of bandwidth every
month (some clients who take advantage of the unlimited
bandwidth feature push out in excess of 100 Gigabytes
of data month after month), an overwhelming majority
of clients do not. Our current capacity is for up to
695 Megabytes of data, well over the bandwidth needed
to serve Yahoo!'s 12 million plus visitors every day,
or Microsoft's website. While we have this much bandwidth
available, we are not using anywhere near this bandwidth.
Also in the future, bandwidth will continue to get cheaper
which works to our advantage.
What restrictions
are there on the other packages?
On both the Bronze and Silver service
we operate a limited bandwidth policy. This means you
can use up to 50Mb a month but after that you may be
asked to transfer to the Gold service or a surcharge
for additional bandwidth will be made at a rate of £1
for each additional Mb of bandwidth used each month.
The Virtual Server is designed for multiple site hosting
so we give you an allocation of 1Gb a month and then
charge just 5p/Mb thereafter.
